As National Convention approaches I am mindful that each voice matters in our organization. Many people over the years have asked me what I do with Tau Beta Sigma and why I do what I do. I take pride in educating musicians and friends around the country as I describe that TBS is a “National Honorary Band Service Organization” that focuses on “leadership development” and “women in music”.
When I describe the leadership opportunities our students receive within their chapters and throughout the districts it is obvious to everyone that we make a huge impact on college bands via leadership. It also is very obvious that we all work together to make our organization great. However, we know that our work begins with individuals who choose to step up and make their voices heard. Every member chooses to serve their band and every member decides how involved they want to become.
Once that decision is made the path is set, right? Just follow the chapter’s plan and help lead the band, right? Or is there perhaps a time when you must stand on your own in order to really help the band or chapter or the organization?
We know those moments exist and they are sometimes the most defining moments of your life. But how do you know when you should take a stand on your own? You must trust your heart, your instinct or gut, and your family values. You must also trust the organization’s values, policies, and regulations. Not to mention you must follow the law. If each member stood up when they saw a problem arising, or when they felt uncomfortable in a situation, we would probably not have the hazing problems that occur in some band programs. Instead some feel safe in the group mentality and say nothing. It’s at that exact moment we need you to “Take a Stand for Tau Beta Sigma” and the bands we lead.
You can “Take a Stand for TBS” by running for an office, by chairing a committee, or by speaking up in a meeting when things take a wrong turn. More importantly you can “Take a Stand” by standing up to bullying or against hazing by making a phone call. With these actions you are ensuring the future of the organization. All it takes is one voice to make a difference.
