TBS Moderators, January Spotlights

The moderators thought a Spotlight topic would be a fun way to get more people actively involved in reading The Kadenza.  Each month a Spotlight will be featured on a National Officer, a District Officer [sometimes two!] and a chapter from the district.  This month, the Spotlight is on:

  • National Vice President of  Special Projects, Dr. Kathryn Kelly
  • District President, Jenny Hirt
  • District Secretary/Treasurer, Meghan Hayward
  • The Epsilon Chapter at Butler University

Dr. Kathryn Kelly was installed as National Vice President of Special Projects at the 2009 National Convention held in Phoenix, Arizona.

Q. When were you initiated in Tau Beta Sigma?
A. I was initiated into the Eta Delta Chapter at Howard University on April 22, 1998.

Q. What chapter and/or district offices did you hold?
A. I have held the offices of Chapter President, Chapter Parliamtarian, Chapter Vice President of Membership, District Treasurer, and District President.

Q. What is your current occupation?
A. I am currently a Senior (3rd year) Internal Medicine President Physician.  I will complete my training on June 30, 2010 and stay on as one of three Chief Medicine Residents next year before finding a real job, most likely with Unity Health Care here in DC.  Basically an Internal Medicine doctor does adult health care both in hosptial and in the outpatient clinic.  I want to eventually work in academic medicine and teach.  I am also interested in Cultural Sensitivity and Underserved Populations.  I chose Internal Medicine because it allows me to have some variability and it allows you to really make your career what you want it to be because
it is so diverse.

Q. Favorite service project?
A. My favoritite service projrct so far has
been Hands on DC that helps to update DC schools.  In TBS my favorite Service Project to the Band was the Annual “Sex Talks” that we started to educate band members on sex and hygiene.

Q. Favorite TBS fundraiser?
A. My favoritite fundraiser has been the Pie-in-the-face at District Convention.  It is always fun to see chapters buy their members.  We also make a lot of money for the District.

Q. Favorite sisterhood event?
A. My favorite sisterhood event while I was in my chapter was Founder’s Week.  We always began Founder’s Week in Chapel giving thanks for the year before.  Then each day we would host a different event while ending the week with a dinner for all the past
and present members of the chapter.

Q. What plans do you have for the biennium?
A. My biggest plan for the biennium is actually going to be announced at District Conventions so I have to stay tight lipped until then.  However, I think my goal in general is to give more exposure to the current programs of the sorority and to implement a new program that will bring light to music education and the wonderful acpects of our sorority.

Q. Favorite place Tau Beta Sigma has taken you so far?
A. So far my favorite place is hands down Stillwater, Oklahoma.  It is an amazing feeling to be at the founding chapters.  I hope to be able to visit Texas Tech in the near future.  However, the most memorable moment in my TBS life has to be Wava in Phoenix giving me my oath of office.  I was crying like a baby.  It meant so much to me and makes me want to do my best everyday for this organization.

Q. Top 2 actors and actresses?
A. I love Brad Pitt and my favorite movie has me in it, “Legens of the Fall”.  I also love his wife, Angelina Jolie (are they married?), lol.  I would have to says that I don’t know who else would be on the top of my list.  Maybe Vince Vaughn because he is absolutely hilarious and I could watch “Old School” and “Wedding Crashers” all the time.

Q. What music is your guilty pleasure?
A. I think that would have to be Beyonce.  I absolutely love her and I have almost everything she has done including her music with Destiny’s Child.

Q. What is something people might be interested to learn about you?
A. I actually think I am pretty boring.  I love Harry Potter and have read all the books and seen all the movies.  I will likely be first in line to see the last one.   One thing that I think people should know is really how much Tau Beta Sigma has impacted my life.  I have 2 wonderful Best Friends, Lois and Ebony that came out of TBS.  I met my husband in TBS (he is a Kappa Kappa Psi brother from Howard) and I think the leadership and ideals of TBS have helped me in my current career.  Additionally, the comradery and sisterhood I have felt in the organization teaches me how music can overcome all boundaries and all differences and make us
love one another regardless of what is on the outside.

The final spotlight is on the Epsilon Chapter at Butler University.

Q. When was your chapter initiated?
A. Epsilon was founded on July 7, 1946 and re-chartered on April 2, 1977.

Q. How many active, conditional, and prospective members does your chapter have?
A. We have 28 active members, 3 conditional, and we just had third degree the last week of the semester, so no prospectives at the moment!  Our last class had 11 members though.

Q. Favorite service project?
A. We started a new service project this year that was decorating the stands for the marching band for homecoming week, and it was a lot of fun, and we had prospective members join in too.  We got great feedback and are making it into an annual event now.

Q. Favorite and/or most successful fundraiser?
A. Our most recent fundraiser was really successful.  We made candy grams for Halloween and delivered them to students on campus.  Our favorite was probably when we were raising money for Relay for Life.  We put a cardboard cut out in music professors offices.  They had to donate money to get it out and they could either send it to another professor, or just get rid of it.

Q. Favorite sisterhood event?
A. After any event we have for TBS we usually make a Steak ‘n’ Shake run, and it’s great because we all get to hang out with our sisters.  We also always make sisterhood retreat a great and interesting time.

Q. What is your chapter’s favorite thing to do on campus together?
A. On campus, besides hanging out, we really like providing any support we can to all music students (especially when we can provide sugar through bakes sales!).

Q. Do you have any upcoming events on your calendar (i.e. degrees, concerts, etc.)?
A. The semester just started on January 11th, so nothing yet!
Q. What is something unique about your chapter?
A. Probably the most unique thing about us is that we are all so different, but we still connect together and form a wonderful chapter.
