Hi all, I hope everyone had a blast at this year’s NCD Convention! Nu and Lambda certainly did. I would personally like to thank everyone for coming this past weekend. It was an exciting and inspiring time, and I think I speak for both councils when I say that I hope that everyone took something positive from this convention. District season may be over, but that doesn’t mean we have to stop bonding! Here’s hoping that we can connect across the district during the coming months at Summer Function, Leadership Symposium, and other random, impromptu events! Here’s looking to Merrillville in 2011!

Hello North Central District!

The Epsilon Chapter of Tau Beta Sigma thought long and hard about what new sisterhood event we could come up with for the chapter challenge. While brainstorming, we did come up with some super fun social events that we are planning on doing next semester. The event that our chapter decided upon for our new sisterhood event is a scrapbook extravaganza! At this event, we plan on making extremely delicious homemade cinnamon rolls while we artfully scrapbook the chapter’s recent events. The Epsilon Chapter believes that there is nothing better than tasty food and bonding as sisters while we document the exciting times we have had together. We are all looking forward to this new sisterhood event and cannot wait until we see all of the other chapters at convention!!

Sincerely,
The sisters of the Epsilon Chapter
Tau Beta Sigma

Greetings North Central District!

In honor of National Sisterhood week March 22-24, we have decided to hold a sisterhood event every night of that week, starting Monday and ending on Founder’s Day with a shindig full of dancing and dressing fancy. Every night we will hold a sisterhood event that is not mandatory but will be loads of fun. The week will be set out as follows: Movie Monday, Tasty Tuesday, Wava Wednesday, Thirsty Thursday, and Fancy Friday. The event we are most excited about however is Thursday aka “Thirsty Thursday”. It is a new event that our Sisterhood Committee has created for the week. We will have a “mocktail” party where members of our sisterhood committee will each bring a non-alcoholic mixed drink to share with the chapter. It will just be a chance for us all to enjoy each others company and each others mixed concoctions as well as a chance for the membership candidates to complete their interviews of actives and alumni members. This is a fun new event that we hope to make a regular sisterhood and repeat in the future. The sisters of Epsilon Iota can’t wait to see you all at Convention! EEEIII!!!

Sisters of the NCD!

I wanted to share with you all a new idea that I have come up with and is in the process of becoming a new event. I recently became the Joint committee head for the Alpha Delta chapter and for some time I have wanted to see us work closer to our brother chapter. On the way home from MER I had this idea to do a “Sib’s Week.” What this is is a week similar to sisterhood week but instead we get together with Kappa Kappa Psi.

I am looking to get this set up for spring. Some of the activities that my committee and I have come up with are ice cream socials, bonfires, movies, water balloon fights and other fun activities that we can all just have fun doing. After the week is over we plan to have a joint ritual followed by a picnic. I am hoping this a great success and that other chapters might be able to use this idea as well!

Love in the Bond!

Julie Coleman here, from the amazing Eta Zeta chapter of TBS!

I’m excited to share with you stories from the exciting adventures of last Saturday’s NKU Block!

The day was eventful, beginning with several wrong turns and detours on the road to the lovely campus of Northern Kentucky University. About twenty sisters from HZ attended the block, several of which, including myself, arrived slightly late due to lack of driving ability and direction. But despite our tardiness, we were greeting with smiling faces and the warm welcome of our wonderful district officers.

The block began with a “Wife Swap” game, allowing each chapter to pair with another and discuss the way we run our chapters as well as our problems and accomplishments. Not only was this a wonderful opportunity to show off our successes and help devise solutions for our weaknesses, we also got the chance to socialize with other sisters, making new friends and borrowing ideas for our own use. We were inspired by the sisters of UC to develop new themes for fundraisers, sisterhood events, and rush functions.

We then split into different rooms for workshops on committees, leadership, and continuing membership education. Our energetic VPSP taught us several helpful tidbits about the Kadenza, including its past, present and future. We learned in more detail how to work the current website, and brainstormed ideas for future ideas and NCD publications.

Perhaps my favorite part of the day, besides the boxes of oatmeal cream pies and cosmic brownies circulating the room, was the music workshop. Several of the sisters gathered together and rehearsed our Loyalty Song and the TBS Hymn. We also added the newest piece to our repertoire, The Affirmation that was introduced just last summer at National Convention. This beautiful composition gave me chills as we sang its powerful chords a cappella. Its symbolic construction and lyrics make a perfect addition to rituals and special chapter events.

Overall, the day was eventful, and our sisters left with dozens of new ideas and inspirational thoughts to instill into their own home chapters.

The Sigma Chapter is proud to commission a piece of music in honor of Ed and Rosie Williams

After two years of hard work and fundraising, Sigma Chapter has received our piece, “Always We Begin Again” by Patrick Burns. This piece was commissioned in honor of the memories of Ed and Rosie Williams.

Ed and Rosie arrived at ONU in 1973, and Ed became the chair of the music department in 1982. Ed accomplished many things during his stay at ONU, including starting the Summer Music Camp, supervising many restorations and additions to Presser hall, teaching courses, and conducting many ensembles including the Symphony Orchestra, Jazz Band, and Brass Ensemble. His dedication also reached out to the community as he was honored for his 30 years of directing the Lima Area youth Orchestra. Ed was a brother and the Sponsor of Sigma Chapter. Ed had a laid-back personality and always had a laugh to share. One of his phenomenal qualities was his ability to remember every student’s name, hometown, and major. Tragically, on July 14, 2005, we lost Ed suddenly. Ed taught us more than the technicalities of music; he taught us the love of music.
Rosie was made an Honorary Brother of Sigma Chapter in 2005, and she also served as the Advisor of the Gamma Mu Chapter of Tau Beta Sigma for many years. She was a resident artist in piano and harpsichord at ONU. She taught courses in music theory, piano, and accompanied many students. Rosie was also a composer and her pieces have been performed throughout the United States and Europe. Her compositions are still performed annually as a part of the processional for the Undergraduate Commencement Ceremony. Rosie had a very contagious smile and bubbly personality. Her students, friends, and colleagues remember her famous sayings such as, “Maintain your groovy selves.” On March 26, 2007 Rosie passed away after her long battle with cancer. She did not, however, leave us without putting her hand on all of our hearts.

If you are interested in coming to see this performance, call the Freed Center box office at 419-772-1900. Tickets for this performance go on sale Monday April 19, 2010. The concert is May 9th and is part of the Spring Band Festival, a weekend-long celebration of band music. Patrick Burns will be the guest conductor and both bands will be featuring work in addition to the commissioned work.

The 2011 National Convention may seem a bit far off in the future, but it will sneak up on us before we know it! Are you planning on attending? How about your chapter sending a representative? There are many little tasks that we can begin to start planning to attend National Convention in Colorado Springs, CO. Here are some ideas that each chapter can do to help plan and save to ensure your chapter will be represented at National Convention!

· Set aside 10 or 15% of all fundraisers into a travel fund: By having a constant set of fundraisers and setting aside a small percentage each time, a small amount of money can add up quick. There are several chapters that divide up their fundraisers, merchandise sales, etc. and put away set percentage. Then when it come times to attend National Convention this fund will be available to help pay for registration, travel or hotel costs.

· University funds available for registered student organizations on campus: Many College and Universities have money set aside for registered student organizations on campus to assist in your organization to attend an educational conference. This is usually an application process and usually takes time. There are also no guarantees of how much exactly your chapter may receive. Planning ahead and looking into what is available can prove to be very helpful. I know many chapter have done this in the past and it has helped pay for their registration or travel costs to attend a convention. Basically you don’t know what is available until you try and there is money out there for this purpose.

· Music & Band Department Assistance: Not all Music or Band Departments are able to assist or may not help in this matter, but some have and will. A good time to ask your Band or Music Department is at the end of fiscal/budget year, so find out when that is for your University. Some departments have a little extra dollars in their budget and if they know it will help a student attend an educational event, or someone that made the National Intercollegiate Band (NIB) they may pass money towards your chapter. The key is to present and inform your departments of the workshops, NIB and events of convention that can enhance your chapter. You never know until you ask.

· Conduct a fundraiser strictly for National Convention: A fundraiser planned out in advance and all proceeds go towards National Convention can also assist a chapter to get to National Convention. The key is to plan a fundraiser in plenty of time, get as many members involved and raise as much money as possible to help your endeavors.

Doing one of these tasks above or a combination will be a sure way to help you get to National Convention. It may not pay for everyone’s way or pay the full amount, but every little bit helps and in today’s economy putting our resources together will help us get to where we want to go. Good luck with your endeavors and planning for National Convention. It is a trip that is worth attending and you will not want to miss out! J

Tau Beta Sigma For Greater Bands!

Dollie O’Neill
